About this tour

Most visitors see Erg Chebbi from the back of a camel for an hour at sunset. On this trek you cross it on foot. After a scenic drive through the Rose Valley, the Todra Gorge and the palm groves of Tinghir, you meet the team at Merzouga and walk straight into the dunes.

A full day traversing the sand brings you to camp near Bouighed; then on to Hassi Mardani, an old village at the foot of the dunes, and across the dark Hamada du Guir to the isolated Erg Znaigui and the oasis village of Begaa. Expect around 5 hours of walking a day. The return to Ouarzazate follows the Draa Valley.

Frequently asked questions

Is Erg Chebbi hard to walk across?

Walking on soft sand is slower than on a path, so days are paced at around 5 hours with plenty of breaks. Moderate fitness is enough.

When is the best time for this trek?

October to the end of March. The Merzouga area warms up earlier in spring than the Draa, so we do not run it from April.

Where do we sleep?

In two-person tents pitched by the camel team in the dunes or beside a palm grove, with foam mattresses provided. On clear, mild nights you can drag your mattress out and sleep under the stars.

What should I pack?

A warm sleeping bag, a soft duffel of up to 12 kg (the camels carry it), a small daypack, ankle-high walking boots, sandals for camp, a warm fleece for the evenings, a 1.5–2 L water bottle, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headtorch and your personal medication.
