About this tour

Erg Chigaga is the Sahara the way most people imagine it: a remote sea of high dunes that can only be reached by 4×4. This private expedition takes you there in a Toyota Land Cruiser with an English-speaking driver-guide.

Along the way you'll visit the ancient Quranic library and green pottery workshops of Tamegroute, drive across the dry Iriqui lake on the old Paris–Dakar route, stop at the carpet town of Taznakht and finish with a guided visit of Aït Ben Haddou.

Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Ouarzazate – Zagora

Morning crossing of the High Atlas, lunch in Ouarzazate and an afternoon drive down the Draa Valley to a hotel in Zagora with dinner.

Day 2Zagora – Tamegroute – M'Hamid – Erg Chigaga

Visit Tamegroute, lunch in M'Hamid where the road ends, then head off-road into the desert. Sunset camel trek, dinner and music around the fire at camp.

Day 3Erg Chigaga – Iriqui – Foum Zguid – Ouarzazate

Sunrise camel ride and breakfast, then cross the Iriqui lakebed to Foum Zguid for lunch, stop in Taznakht for Berber carpets and spend the night in Ouarzazate.

Day 4Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Marrakech

Optional Atlas Film Studios, a guided tour of Aït Ben Haddou with lunch nearby and the drive back over the mountains to Marrakech.

Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi?

Erg Chigaga is only reachable by 4×4 and is far quieter; Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is easier to reach and busier.

What are the bathrooms like at camp?

The standard camp has shared bathrooms; the luxury upgrade gives you an ensuite with hot shower.

Do I have to ride a camel?

No – the Land Cruiser can take you straight to camp.
