Private4-Day Draa Valley Desert Trek from Marrakech
About this tour
Short on time but want to really walk in the Sahara rather than just ride out to a camp? This four-day trip packs in the full experience. After crossing the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass you drop into the Draa Valley, a ribbon of palm groves and earthen kasbahs, and meet your camel team at the village of Ouled Driss.
Two full walking days take you across a stony plateau past an abandoned kasbah, through the Lahnaniche dunes and along the edge of the erg to the palm groves of Ras Nkhal near M'Hamid. A cook prepares every meal, the dromedaries carry the bags, and nights are spent in tents or under a sky full of stars. The trip ends with a stop at the pottery village of Tamegroute on the way back to Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions
Is this trek suitable for beginners?
Yes. Walking days are around 5 hours on sand and firm desert plateau with no big climbs, and the camels carry everything except your daypack.
Do I have to ride the camels?
No – this is a walking trek and the dromedaries carry the luggage and kitchen. If anyone gets tired, a camel can usually be saddled for a stretch.
When can I do this trek?
The desert walking season runs from October to April, when days are warm and pleasant and nights are cool. From May to September it is too hot to walk safely in the dunes.
What should I pack?
A warm sleeping bag, a soft duffel of up to 12 kg (the camels carry it), a small daypack, ankle-high walking boots, sandals for camp, a warm fleece for the evenings, a 1.5–2 L water bottle, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headtorch and your personal medication.
