About this tour

This trek was designed with children in mind – from about four years old. Walking stages are short, there is plenty of time to slide down dunes, and a camel can always be saddled for tired legs. You only carry a small daypack; the caravan carries everything else.

From M'Hamid you walk to the Lahniti dunes, cross a mix of rocky reg and small dunes to the well of Ras Errich, then head west to the tall dunes of Bounou and visit its village. Evenings mean campfires, a sky full of stars and bread baked in the hot sand by the cook.

Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Ouarzazate – M'Hamid

Leave Marrakech at about 08:00 and cross the High Atlas, lunch in Ouarzazate, then follow the Draa Valley to M'Hamid (about 460 km, 7.5 hours with stops). A short walk from the road brings you to camp at the edge of the dunes.

Day 2M'Hamid – Erg Lahniti

Help load the camels, then a relaxed walk to the Lahniti dunes with lunch beneath tamarisk trees. Only about an hour of walking in total, leaving the afternoon free for dune games.

Day 3Erg Lahniti – Ras Errich

Cross a desert plateau mixing stony reg and small dunes to camp beside the well of Ras Errich – a chance for a simple wash – with sunset over the sand and bread baked in the embers.

Day 4Ras Errich – Bounou dunes

Head west with shady breaks under tamarisks, then an afternoon visit to the village of Bounou before the last night in camp among its dunes.

Day 5Bounou – Zagora – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

A 20-minute walk to the vehicle, then the drive back through the Draa Valley and over the mountains, arriving in Marrakech around 18:00.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this trek suitable for?

Children from around 4 years old do well on this trek. Walking stages are short and a camel can carry younger children when they get tired. Ask us about child prices.

Where do we sleep?

In two-person tents pitched by the camel team in the dunes or beside a palm grove, with foam mattresses provided. On clear, mild nights you can drag your mattress out and sleep under the stars.

When can I do this trek?

The desert walking season runs from October to April, when days are warm and pleasant and nights are cool. From May to September it is too hot to walk safely in the dunes.

What should I pack?

A warm sleeping bag, a soft duffel of up to 12 kg (the camels carry it), a small daypack, ankle-high walking boots, sandals for camp, a warm fleece for the evenings, a 1.5–2 L water bottle, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headtorch and your personal medication.
