About this tour

M'Hamid El Ghizlane is known as the gateway to the desert, and this trek walks straight out of it towards Erg Chigaga. You follow the old pilgrim path to the shrine of Sidi Naji, cross the Bousnina reg and camp beneath Erg Zahar, nicknamed the 'singing dunes' for the hum the sand makes when it slides.

Further west you pass the ruins of a nomad ksar at Erg Smar, cross the Sedrat reg to its big dunes and arrive at Erg Chigaga, where you can climb the highest dune for a final sunset. A 4x4 brings you back to M'Hamid and on to Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

What are the singing dunes?

Erg Zahar is famous for a low humming sound produced when dry sand avalanches down its steep faces – best heard on calm afternoons.

Do I have to ride the camels?

No – this is a walking trek and the dromedaries carry the luggage and kitchen. If anyone gets tired, a camel can usually be saddled for a stretch.

Where do we sleep?

In two-person tents pitched by the camel team in the dunes or beside a palm grove, with foam mattresses provided. On clear, mild nights you can drag your mattress out and sleep under the stars.

What should I pack?

A warm sleeping bag, a soft duffel of up to 12 kg (the camels carry it), a small daypack, ankle-high walking boots, sandals for camp, a warm fleece for the evenings, a 1.5–2 L water bottle, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headtorch and your personal medication.
